A short History of Borehamwood Bowls Club by Kay Stocker In 1957 the Borehamwood Men's club was founded. In 1962 when the Men's Club changed their base to the newly opened Meadow Park, several of the wives started to roll up on the green. They formed a Ladies Club in 1963. Then the ladies Club joined with the Men. Firstly, at the insistence of Hertsmere (the local Authority) and for financial reasons. When the local authority was Elstree Council the Ladies only had one rink, and the use of the Men's four rinks (conditionally, when they were not using them). But in those days men were rarely seen on the green during the afternoons! With the coming of Hertsmere, they stipulated the green must be used equally between the two Clubs. In 1966, the Council Workmen burnt the green and it was unusable for the rest of the Season so matches were played at Stirling Comer (Finsbury Memorial Sports Ground). During the late 60s and 70s' most women members had to rely on buses for transport. If they went to an Association Match, especially to the coast, Watford members would ask to be dropped off first on the way home. The last bus (306) was 9.20p.m. and they often got back just minutes too late. All they could do was to catch a bus to Bushey, then walk to Elstree and wait for a bus to Borehamwood. This happened so many times they had to stop entering Matches, until there were Ladies with their own cars. The new Club House was built in 1996. In 2005, one of our members Arthur Moseley was president of the Watford & District Bowling Association and in 2006 President of Hertfordshire County Bowls Association. In 2007 we celebrate our Golden Jubilee year. (Fifty years young.) Mention must be made of the Borehamwood badge,
The Hart is self-explanatory. But the tree - well now that can't have anything to do with Charles (he who hid in an Oak Tree). The Club has close associations with Radlett Club, where it is said there were three Oak Trees in the area and only one remains. Could this be one of the missing trees? Last updated: 04/09/2007 |
